Offers and Negotiation
Receiving an offer starts a new, shorter conversation. Preparing for it can matter as much as the interviews.
Understand the package
| Component | Notes |
|---|---|
| Base salary | Guaranteed fixed pay |
| Variable / bonus | Often performance-linked; ask how it is paid out |
| Equity (RSUs / options) | Check vesting schedule and cliff |
| Joining / relocation bonus | One-time; may need to be repaid on early exit |
| Benefits | Insurance, leave, learning budget, remote policy |
Compare total compensation per year, not only the headline number, and consider growth, team and learning.
Negotiating respectfully
- Express enthusiasm first: "Thank you, I am excited about this role."
- Ask for time to decide (a few days is normal).
- Share a specific, reasoned request, ideally with a competing offer or market data.
- Negotiate one package, not item by item in separate emails.
- Get the final terms in writing before accepting.
"I am very interested in joining. Based on the scope of the role and
my other offer of X, I was hoping we could discuss a base of Y.
Is there flexibility?"
What not to do
- Do not lie about other offers.
- Do not accept on the call before reading the written offer.
- Do not burn bridges if you decline; thank them and stay in touch.
Before you accept
- Role, level and location confirmed in writing
- Notice period and joining date clear
- Any bond, non-compete or repayment clauses reviewed
- Team and manager questions answered
